18th and 19th August Review:
Robbie Blake! What a volley!!! Congratulations to Burnley and Robbie Blake in particular for scoring an absolute tank of a volley against Manchester United. Blake’s 19th minute thunder bolt was enough to see the Clarets pick three points against the Champions as they won 2-0 at Turf Moor. Michael Carrick had seen an earlier volley go over and also had a penalty expertly saved by Brian Jensen, a bad day for Mr.Carrick.
Anfield also proved to be a hive of volley activity last night, as not one but two volleys were scored. Fernando Torres had opened up scoring early against Stoke, then Glen Johnson scored a sublime scissor kick just before the break to put Liverpool 3-0 up at half time. However Liverpool were not content with just one volley and added another on 78 minutes when Dirk Kuyt latched onto a low Steven Gerrard cross. David Ngog ended the rout when he headed into a empty net to give Liverpool 3 points and a 6-0 victory.
The other nights action saw Tottenham beat Hull 5-1, with Jermaine Defoe scoring emphatic hat trick. The glamour tie of the evening saw Birmingham City win over Portsmouth 1-0. Kevin Phillips had a volley denied by David James, before James McFadden sealed the win with an injury time penalty.
Tuesdays action saw Chelsea win 3-1 over Sunderland. Michael Ballack saw a fierce volley blocked on the line in the first half, before he scored what appeared to be a volley in the second half. However after hours of detailed video footage we can reveal that the ball had touched the floor before Ballack connected with it. Unlucky Michael. Other goals were scored by Lampard and Deco with Darren Bent scoring his second goal for Sunderland. The other game of the night saw Wigan go down at home to Wolves 1-0. That is all.
