Weekend and Monday Review:
Well what a disappointing set of fixtures from the Premiership this week. Come Monday not a single volley or nutmeg. That is till cometh the man, cometh the hour: Fernando Torres who scored a nice volley for Liverpool against Aston Villa. However his two goal effort proved to be worthless as Liverpool went down 2-3 to Villa at Anfield. No wonder Gerrard looks so distraught!
And he wasn’t the only one, we noticed this week that there were quite a few demi volleys and self set up goals this weekend from Dimitar Berbatov, Kenwyne Jones and Carlton Cole. This is not good enough, if you really want to improve your teams chances of winning the league, you should be hitting those balls first time! That is why we are applauding the efforts of two very special men this week; Kevin Phillips and El Hadji Diouf. Both men had volleyed efforts on goals last weekend but were cruelly denied by Goalkeepers, Aiming ability or elements beyond our control.
Other results from the weekend saw Man United thrash Wigan 5-0, with Michael Owen opening his account for the club. Arsenal also ran out easy winners with a 4-1 win over Portsmouth, with William Gallas arguably scoring the best comedy goal of the season so far. Man City also continued their winning ways, however it was a less than convincing 1-0 defeat of newly promoted Wolves. Tottenham also continued their impressive form against West Ham, coming from behind to win 2-1. Chelsea grabbed another 3 points with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Fulham. Hull earned their first victory of the season 1-0 against Bolton, with Jozy Altidore impressing on his debut. Burnley also recommenced their winning ways with an easy 1-0 win over an out of form Everton side, whose Joleon Lescott transfer saga has finally seemed to come to end with the defender joining money-bags Manchester City. Sunderland beat Blackburn 2-1 with Kenwyne Jones scoring both the goals for The Black Cats. And finally the glamour tie of the weekend saw the first draw of the season with Birmingham City and Stoke ending goaless.
Tables to be updated later. Keep Volleying.
